Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), illustration. AMOC is the main ocean system in the Atlantic ocean and it influences global climate, European weather and tropical rainfall patterns. The red line represents the warm, less dense surface currents and the blue line represents the cold, dense-deep-water currents. Once the warm surface water reaches the cold north near Greenland, it releases its heat into the atmosphere, becomes saltier and denser, sinks to the ocean floor, and flows back southward through the deep ocean. Located south-east of Greenland is a 'cold blob', also known as 'the warming hole'. It is a large patch of the North Atlantic Ocean that is getting colder while the rest of the world gets warmer.
